The physio who took his time with my hamstring

I went in with a pulled hamstring and left knowing exactly what was going on in that room.

Chris standing shirtless in paint splattered shorts on a stripped back brick job site, shirt in one hand, looking straight at the camera.

I did it on a job, not in the gym, which is the part that still winds me up. Bent the wrong way getting a unit up a narrow stairwell, felt the back of my leg go tight like a rope being pulled hard from the other end, and then carried on for another four hours anyway, because the work is mine and nobody else was turning up to finish it.

By the Thursday I could not sit down properly. So I did the sensible thing for once and booked myself in with a physio. And if you are the sort of man who reads my stuff late at night with the lamp off, this is the bit where it starts getting interesting for you.

Why a self employed lad ignores a hamstring for three days

Nobody pays me to rest. That is the trade off with running your own jobs. No sick pay, no cover, no one ringing to ask how you are getting on. Just a van that needs loading and a customer who wants their kitchen finished by Friday. So you strap it, you swallow it, and you tell yourself it will settle overnight.

It never settles overnight. I knew that walking up the stairs sideways like an old man on the second morning. I knew it again when I could feel every step in the back of my thigh, a dull heat that spread up through the hamstring whenever I loaded it.

I train hard and I have done for years, so I know the difference between sore and damaged. This was the second one. And there is only one kind of man who gets to put his hands on me when I am in that state, and that is a man who actually knows what he is doing.

The first ten minutes on the physio table

The clinic was above a row of shops, one of those rooms that smells faintly of clean linen and liniment, blinds half down, no music. He asked me to strip to shorts and lie face down. I did, because that is what you do, and because there is a certain satisfaction in being the one on the table for once when every other hour of my week is me giving the orders.

He was older than me. Calm voice, big forearms, the sort of hands that have been doing this twenty years and do not need to explain themselves. He ran his thumbs up the back of my leg once, slowly, and found the exact spot without me saying a word.

I breathed out through my teeth and stayed very still. Face down, forehead on the rest, eyes shut. You learn a lot about a man from how he handles you when you cannot see his face.

The moment it stopped being treatment

Here is the thing about a sports massage. There is a rhythm to it and the rhythm tells you everything. Assessment is quick and efficient. Release work is slow and deliberate. And then there is a third thing, which is a man taking his time because he has decided he is enjoying himself.

He had moved past the hamstring. Not by much. Just enough that I clocked it. The pressure changed, the pace dropped, and the room got quieter in a way that had nothing to do with the blinds or the traffic outside.

I did not lift my head. I did not say anything. I just let the silence sit there and do the work for me, which is a trick I learned a long time before I ever walked into that room.

Why I did not stop him

People assume being in control means being the one doing the touching. It does not. Control is knowing exactly what is happening, deciding it is allowed to continue, and letting the other man carry the weight of wondering whether you noticed.

He was waiting for something. A flinch, a word, a shift of the hips that told him yes or no. I gave him nothing. I lay there with my face down and my breathing even and let him work through it on his own, and I could feel him sweating over it a little, which I will admit I enjoyed more than I should have.

Understand me. I am not the man who gets taken advantage of on a table. I am the man who decides how long it goes on for. There is a difference and you already know which one you would want me to be.

What good hands actually do to a bloke like me

I spend my week being the strong one. Heavy lifts, long days, everything on my shoulders, nobody above me. That is the life I built and I would not swap it. But there is something about lying face down in a quiet room and handing my body over to somebody for forty minutes that gets right underneath all of it.

It is the heat that gets me. Palms pressing through muscle that has been braced for three days, everything letting go at once, the sharp bit and then the relief that comes straight after it. You go somewhere else in your head. Your jaw unclenches. Your hands open.

And then you are lying there fully aware that a man you have met once is the reason your whole body has just gone soft, and there is nothing you can do about it except lie still and let him keep going.

If those had been your hands instead

Now think about it properly, because I know you are. Same room, same table, same low light through the blinds. Except it is you stood there, and I have just told you where it hurts and then put my face down and stopped talking.

You would be nervous. Not of me, of yourself. Of how obvious it would be the second your hands landed on the back of my thigh and I let out that first breath. You would go slower than you needed to, and you would tell yourself it was for my benefit, and we would both know that was a lie.

The good news for you is that I like that. I like a man who cannot quite hide it. I like being the thing somebody has to concentrate very hard to stay professional around. Forty minutes of you pretending, and me knowing, and neither of us saying it.

The kind of man I let get that close

Not many, if I am honest. I am picky with who gets near me when I am not in charge of the situation, and anyone who has ever tried it on with me in the wrong way has found out fast how quickly I go cold.

But a man who is good with his hands and honest about what he wants, who can hold a bit of tension without fumbling it, who waits to be told. That one gets a lot further with me than he expects to. That is the whole map, and most people never read it.

My leg is fine now, by the way. Back squatting properly, back on the tools, no strapping. I did go back the following week though. I would tell you it was for the hamstring.
